I am sure you have had wind of the turmoil that is agitating the UK right now after the Supreme Court decision of the 16th of April that decided that the legal definition of a woman is linked to biological sex. If not, where have you been hiding. This has really shaken me to my core and prompted me to record my first advocacy episode where I debunk the idea that gender is an ideology and put the debate where it belongs: in the human rights camps.
I was going to do this as a speech at my next toastmasters’ meeting but then decided it would do nicely as a podcast episode. Speeches at Toastmasters are limited to 5 to 7 minutes and it’s not enough to explore the topic in depth.
In a nutshell:
Sex and gender are two entirely different concepts. Members of the medical community in the UK have described this ruling as absurd and scientifically incorrect.
Sometimes the law is wrong and outdated. The Supreme Court refused to consult members of the trans community before ruling and the Good law Project is already preparing a case to take the UK government to the European Court of Justice. You can help by donating to them so that the blow to human rights that just happened can be corrected.
This is not a case of standing by and allowing things to unfold. Trans rights are human rights.
In the meantime, if you are a woman, please post on social media that trans women are welcome in your space by following Katie Neeves’ suggestion on LinkedIn.
